Spartan Chess on a 3D battlefield

Inital setup

Played on 3 6x8 boards, each player starts with 18 Pawns, 2 Rooks, 4 Bishops, 4 Knights, 1 Queen and 1 King.

FIDE Pieces

Pawn

Pawns move like orthodox pawns on their current plane, but can go to another plane for captures only (see figure).

Knight

Knights move following L shape paths in the 3 dimensions. They land on the opposite color from the starting cell.

Bishop

Bishops move following 3D diagonals always remaining on the same color.

Rook

Queen

The Queen moves like Rook + Bishop + Unicorn.

King

The King moves like orthodox King on its current plane, but can go to another plane for captures only (see figure).

Spartan Pieces

Hoplit

Moves 1 step diagonally forward, and captures one step straight ahead (also above and below). In its initial location it can also jump 2 steps diagonally forward to an empty square.

Captain

Moves and captures 1 or 2 steps (jumping) orthogonally or on the column.

Lieutenant

Moves and captures 1 or 2 steps (jumping) orthogonally or diagonally by the upper or lower corners to change level and square color at the same time.

Cardinal

Combines the move of the bishop and the knight.

Crowned rook

Combines the move and capture of the rook and the king.

King

The King moves like orthodox King on its current plane, but can go to another plane for captures only (see figure).
